I first saw Christine's work during an open studio tour in 2006 (I think?) I remember seeing "The Works" and thinking that is the surface I've been trying to create since college! I wanted to touch it, and ask a thousand questions! I didn't. (I wasn't as pushy as I am now.) I can't believe I waited until 2009 to take a class on encaustic at The Creative Alliance in Baltimore, and Christine was teaching. (She was a resident artist there art the time.)

Her work is even more beautiful and complex in person. Her mastery of the medium is stellar. There is such a great balance of color, depth and imagery. You've gotta check out her website to see the full breath of Christine's work. I love her sculptural work as well, since encaustic is such a tactile medium, she gives the viewer an opportunity to carry some pieces around. I can't wait to see what is coming up for her. Thank you Christine for sharing!! (And for creating another encaustic painter.)

I love that my client chose such a fun picture to capture his spirit.

Time Heals

This finished work has been years in the making. I first mentioned it in this post. I had started the painting below in 2004 after my Dad passed away. I just couldn't get it to a place that I liked.

I ended up painting over it. I just couldn't seem to get across all the complexity that I had wanted. It seemed too elementary to me. So I thought I'd try again in encaustic. My usual palette doesn't always turn out the way I would like. I am still learning the medium. But now that I've made it more subtle and quiet I think it says more. At least to me. I may at some point revisit the image in oils. But for now I'm satisfied.

Not in the philosophical sense, who has time to ponder that now a days!! So, I Googled myself. (Like you haven't done it too.) I was doing research for my new Etsy shop and web page. In the process I found this article from a hot minute ago. It was written by one of my talented clients and it was back in my single tree house (what I called my apartment) days. The studio pictured was the other half of my bedroom!!It was a tiny apartment, with a large bedroom luckily.

I have opened an Etsy shop!! After two years of making every excuse I've finally jumped in. It doesn't hurt that my amazing Hubby got me an archival printer for Christmas and now I can make prints of my work.

It is still a work in progress, but if I waited for perfection I wouldn't of ever opened it. I struggled with whether or not it would devalue my art(?) But, in the end I like the idea that my friends could own a print by me or send a lovely note with my artwork if they can't afford an original oil painting or encaustic.

Aren't these pieces just glowing?! I found Allison Long Hardy when I saw this post about one of her shows. I love the build up of layer after of layer and the colors! I could get mesmerized by them, or lost as I follow the twist and turns of the marks. Allison also plays with the opacity of the inks to add even further dimension. The play off the dark and light in "Shelf Life" really attracts me, as well as the drawing of the scratches/marks through out. The final image of her drawings I was going to begin to describe as a deconstructed version of her prints, but that's not quite true. There is still so much depth and presence to the marks and intensity of the ink. Just lovely! Please check out more of her work on her website and enjoy getting lost in her amazing work.

Miss V and I took a field trip to The Howard County Center for The Arts yesterday afternoon. I got to see "Shelf Life" in person. I'm going to add that to my wish list of artwork I'd like to own. It was a great show, well curated.

Her work is currently being shown at The Howard County Center for the Arts in "Intertwined Expressions" and at The Dupont Gallery in "Crowded Spaces".

So happy to have 3 finished encaustic paintings!! Here are two, I don't have an image of the third yet. I will post that one soon.
It has been so awesome to have studio time. I certainly don't have total balance in my life, but it's nice to be able to find some time for me. I am hoping to really crank it up and apply for some shows by the end of the month. Fingers crossed everyone.

Birthday Celebration

Miss V turned 1! I can hardly believe it's been a year!!
Fun was had by all. But this Momma is tired. (Or maybe...it's sugar coma.)
I also have to give props to Hubby he iced all the cupcakes, including the giant one above. Miss V was nice enough to share as a thank you.

In other news, I'm working on putting together show applications, may have finished some paintings, and am beginning renovations on a new website. Stay tuned!

The first time I saw Anselm Kiefer's work in person I was utterly dumb struck.  I wish I could remember the title of the piece.  It was in the late '90's at the Smithsonian.  It took up the entire room, it felt like, as it covered an expansive wall.  I couldn't get close enough, it begged to be touched.  The structure of it was daunting, and I imagined it hardly being contained by the ground it was painted on. I had seen the grit and grim of ash and strange mixed media elements in Rauschenberg, and Pollack's work, but here it was really used as a medium the intent was clear. I don't know about you, but I am always amazed that this artist that I have been in awe of is still out there today painting in his studio.  Maybe even this weekend. I hope you're creating too!

I guess that post title could refer to me too!! Little Miss V got a pack of yummy crayons for her first Birthday. (Where did that year go?). It's a testament to my self control that i didn't borrow them right away. Don't you just love a pack of new crayons?!  In fact what a great B-day gift for anyone.  It was really cool to watch her amazement at the marks she was leaving. Such a basic joy in creating something. Hopefully she doesn't loose that. I know I haven't.

Or at least by proxy...this post is a little late. My bestie really had her adorable little Miss G two months ago!! I am still mourning the fact that they are all the way over on the left coast, and I haven't even got to snuggle her yet!! I am having so much fun spoiling her long distance though. Here are the contents of my latest care package!! I'm excited to make another wreath for Miss V's nursery in gray, yellow and purple. I got extra elastic to make more felt flower hair bands for her too. But, as you can see she wasn't interested in being my model, so I'm guessing the head band days are over. Who knows she's a fickle sweet pea.

Cure for the Blues

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. After a few hours of being down I took Miss V for a walk. What is it about being outside that always cheers a body up?  The fresh air and physical movement does wonders. And if that's not enough just play some Toddler radio on Pandora. (seriousness!) You can't help but smile, and this blogger has to dance. Hard to stay down after that! 

This Weekends Accomplishments

I got two nights in the studio this weekend, and no frost bite! If my fingers didn't get numb I may have gotten even more finished. These are some snippets of a new encaustic piece. I started with an oil under painting for the first time, and have been including some metal findings. I can't even express how amazing it feels to paint again consistently. Although, I hate when Hubby works a lot of overtime, it motivates me to get out into the studio after Miss V goes to bed. Tonight I have to turn my attention to a pet commission, but I'm sure I'll spend a little time on my own stuff too. I hope you had a productive weekend too!

I have forever been fascinated by beautifully subtle (and not so subtle), sensitive and abstract works. I found this amazing artist Ivo Stoyanov through one of my favorite bloggers. I feel like the linear marks carry a message or I can just get lost in the technique and gestures of the strokes. His work is complex, yet very approachable. I just love it! Somethin's Cooking

I have been getting 45 minutes a day in the studio/garage this week. (not counting heating things up and blowing fuses). It's been amazing. There is lots of stuff cooking! I'm trying out new techniques combining oil and encaustic. My two worlds colliding. There are some new collage materials in the works too. So much fun! I can't wait to share some new work!!

P.S. The above piece is a variation on an image I have been working on in the years since my Father passed away. It always seems to become trite, and not at all what I am going for. Yet, I keep trying! So I set out to scrape it back off and use the panel for another image. (I did the same to the oil paint version too.) But, now that I have a lot of it scraped down, I may end up toying with it a little more before scrapping it all together. Wish me luck!

Best Date Night Ever!

Our road trip date night was a roaring success!! Lily Stockman's show was just delightful. Finally seeing her work in person was only second to meeting her and her amazing husband! They were both our kinda peeps.  So gracious and interesting!! I just can't say enough how nice it was to meet them both. 

The ride up was great. And we even caught a bit of the playoff game in the car. On the way home we detoured in Phili. Hubby showed me around his old college haunts and then we grabbed a cheese steak at Pats which we devoured while warmly ensconced in the car. 

It was such a fabulous night. I don't know how we're going to top it. 

Then a little icing on the cake on Sunday; watching the Ravens win a divisional playoff!

Finally!! I have really been enjoying my craft projects. And my commissions have been so satisfying and reassuring that I can even still make art! I didn't mean to sound so pathetic there. But it's been since I got pregnant that the idea well really has been dry. I've had problems sketching and I'm sure part of it is not being able to just play in the studio. 

But this morning as a browse some of my favorite blogs I'm feeling inspired.  I absolutely love to browse the collection of beautiful artwork here. And the post always lead we on a journey to all sorts of amazing artist. 

Then through Pinterest I found this and this. Two more amazing blogs.  LOVE!  The latter is where I found the breathtaking installation above.  They find all the great artwork for me.  

My sketchbook has finally got some action, and in less than a week so will my studio!!

P.S.  So excited about my adventure tonight!!  (Talk about being inspired!) Hubby and I are road tripping it to meet the amazingly friendly, talented and witty Lily Stockman at an opening of her new artwork.  I've enjoyed following her blog for a while now and I am super happy to meet in the real world.  Can't wait to tell you all about it.

P.S.S.  I apologize, sometimes the exclamation points get the best of me.  I fear I may talk like this too.

No lie, it takes a village & Finally Happy New Year

So I must admit, It's taking me a while to get into the spirit of the New Year. Don't get me wrong the "Shedder" in me loves the idea of cleaning up and putting away and getting organized. I think a part of it is that I have had a hard time reaching any goals in the past year. I don't want to set myself up for failure. I've been pretty good at feeling guilty that none of the parts of my life are getting my full attention. I rather be a little less hard on myself this year. Wait, that might of been a resolution that snuck in there.

Not to sound as if I am lowering my standards, but I need to start with the small list of big things instead of the laundry list of all the things I could address. In order to do this I am getting a little better at asking for help. Miss V is most certainly my top priority. So putting her in good hands so that Momma can find the rest of her identity is priority #1. Thank goodness for Auntie, YaYa, and Hubby. I really don't know how you Momma's out there do it!! I am so glad that I have help!

So what's on the list? Just for now, and when I can to get my runs in. A project that I've promised my Mother I would tackle, and to get into the studio and apply for shows.
And all of this will be done in moderation, no guilt, no time-line, just an effort to do more for me. So three items. A list that can fit on a post-it note. That is certainly new for me!

Here is the last batch of gifts for friends! All distributed last night. Whew. And of course I was working on them up to the last minute. As you know time management with a one year old is not my forte!

Now I have one more rather large unrelated art project to tackle before I can focus on how to get my studio back together. And then..how to stay warm while working in said unheated studio. But that's minor.

I finally have some images I want to work on in encaustic. It is certainly some kind of torture turning them over in my mind and then not being able to create them.

I have forever loved the way sculptors draw. There is this amazing way the medium of pencil, charcoal etc.. becomes rich and volumous as if they bring that 3rd dimension in. There is a power to their simple line. I like their sculptural work but I love the drawings. Some of my favorite art books are just compilations of their sketches. I always find inspiration when I look at them.

As I painter I just can't seem to find that same depth in my own drawings. So I will just enjoy theirs.

(Thought this posted on 12/28! Oops, well, here it is a week late!)

Finished this wreath, a present for my brother just in time for his arrival, hopefully tomorrow!
The last two days have been very productive. I think tonight we are finally ready to move into our "apartment". Now my brother can have the guest room we have vacated. We've spent the last two days using Christmas gift certificates to start organizing. And Miss V got her new crib put together, tonight we'll see if she likes having more room. Fingers crossed it doesn't screw up her sleeping through the night!

Once we do a few more finishing touches I can start to get my studio put back together. Until then I have a few more pillows and wreaths to finish as gifts. Can't wait to tell you what hubby got me to help me get started with Etsy. That post up soon!

Final commission of the year is done! It felt really good to paint. I do like crafting, but for me this is truly my passion. I am hoping to work on household organizing next week and once that's out of the way I can get my studio set up! It's unseasonably warm here recently so perfect for a garage studio. Maybe it'll hold out. And hey, if not there's always the kitchen table!

Hometown Christmas, Hon!

It's beginning to feel a little like that time of year. I took a break from wrapping wreaths and adding the finishing touches to the latest commission and headed to 34th street in Hamden tonight.

We book ended it with a yummy dinner before and a hot cuppa cocoa after. Just a perfect night.

I can't remember if I mentioned this or not. And, yes I could go back and look in my post but since I am horribly bad at tagging them it would take forever. Hubby, Miss V and I are intentionally displaced at the moment. In preparation for our next adventure we have rented out our urban row home and are temporarily in the basement apartment at my Mom's. This all as we search for less urban home that we would like to live in. Whew.

This said basement apartment needed some upgrades that have taken a lot longer than planned. So for months now we have been living sparingly and out of boxes. But that my friends is about to change!! I think maybe even in a week we will be fully settled, able to unpack and I will be able to implement my plan to make our subterranean lair homey.

In this mess of renovating, my studio space, that is now just a stair step away as it is my Mother's garage, has been packed up a bit and is lost under debris as a casualty of making room.

Hmm, this is a REALLY round about way to say that I am currently painting at the kitchen table again. I am itching to get my studio put back together and really go to town on some art. For now though, I will make the best of at least being warm and cozy, and being able to be social while I paint. I do miss that at times.

Christmas wreath

I am happy to report that this week has been rather productive. I have been able to maintain my level of motivation. Yay me!!

I am questioning weather I should be painting or not, but I have decided that at least for now this is getting my discipline back on track and once I complete my latest pet portrait commission I will be ready to paint.

So, I am going to remain completely thrilled that I have managed to make another wreath, complete some Christmas shopping and begun to make some gifts for the "Fam" as well.

I am so proud. Despite Miss V's best tries, (only one nap today).  I managed to finish 4 more pillows and a wreath!!  Not to mention help clean for my Mom and Aunt's big Christmas party tomorrow night.  I feel quite accomplished.  (I think that was one too many pats on the back - I need to stave off Murphy's Law!)

So here are the other pillows and I am starting to play around with a lot of the sweater scraps too. Now that I see them all together, I'm a bit worried that the embellishments are redundant, but as individuals I am ok with them.

I am totally in love with the angora one that has the buttons down the front.  My Aunt has already claimed that as a gift.  I am toying with the idea of adding them to my Etsy store that I am still holding back on launching.  Perhaps I should of spent a few hours on that today.

I hope to share pics of the wreath I just finished a few minutes ago.  Really happy with it and found some great new blogs to share while learning to make it.

Chain of evidence

I have been blown away by the blogging community and sadly feel so far out of the loop. I've tried to keep up with some of my favorites. But have commented little. 

Then out of the blue this week I got inspired and it took me all over the place!  But it also lead to some petty theft of one beautiful felt wreath idea, and of course the sweater pillows.  It started here. I loved the pillows and knew I could do that! You can check out the results here.  From that same site I was introduced to Agnes Blum, check out her beautiful work! I almost didn't feel worthy of the attempt.  Then I saw this and fell in love how beautiful!! I wanted to steal it. The cord everything!! So then I jumped all around for felt flower tutorials, and found even more great sites.  

The best part? One evening after work I was motivated to work on the pillows.   Never underestimate the therapy of making something. It's right up there with running in my book. It's different than painting to me. It doesn't require quite as much mental draining but just as much therapeutic benefits. I also surprised myself with having the patience to actually wrap the wreath.

So thank you blogging world for providing much needed resuscitation.

I am hoping that I can get back into blogging again. I've missed it! Miss V is 10 months old and not a good napper so my free time is so limited!! 

Yet, I do feel like I am finally coming up for air. 

I'm working on a few new projects. And finishing up a painting commission.

Wonky

Everything is wonky!  There is no other word for it.  There have been a rash of small incidents at work, relationships ending, people passing away, and my dear Dakota has had surgery.  Add to that an earthquake and a hurricane and I feel very out of sorts.  

We've moved this weekend.  Our new abode looks like an episode of "Hoarders".  I am lucky if I get a box or two unpacked a day.  So we are living in disarray.  My sanity is being tried and I feel a great need for order.  

But for now I am trying to find peace with this wonkiness that I can't control.  These events that are weighing heavy on me, but can't do much to change. Lovely Miss V is in need of lots of attention these days too, I think she senses the changes.  So, I can only accomplish small tasks at a time. I keep repeating to myself; "This too shall pass."

I've been flipping through sketch books lately to wet my appetite
and feeling better knowing I at least have time to sketch a page or two. There is a quality to the sketch that never comes across in a finished work. The speed in which it is produced makes it feel fresh, and for me the idea that it's not so precious. I can play and experiment with imagery that doesn't always come out in my paintings. I do find that same feeling when I learn a new medium and allow myself to be an "amateur" in my own mind. I don't judge myself so harshly because, hey I'm just learning, right? I would love to be able to bring that attitude to every new piece, just haven't quiet mastered that yet!

It's been so nice to revisit and play again. I feel like I have all these images just waiting to become more than a sketch when I am back in the studio. It's making me feel so much better during my hiatus. I may just explode on that day in the near future when I can sit down at my easel or heat up some wax.

Shedder?

I had a conversation with a musician friend of mine this past week.  I was talking about how I feel like I am the opposite of a hoarder.  He said that I must be a "Shedder". I like that term, I think.  

Whilst preparing for our move I am making room by going through storage at my Mom's house. I have an over abundance of artwork there. Pretty much everything from high school till now. I got rid of most of my high school work (there are slides of them for prosperity). I also went through a lot of stuff from collage, color theory, charcoal assignments. I did pull out a few things to save, and some of the work I still rather like. My senior thesis work won we me the only grant I have received thus far! Although in complete disclosure I have been lax in applying the last 3 years. But maybe there is something in revisiting these images. In excavating these layers of my artist journey it feels good to see how far I've come and reminds me of threads or ideas that may be worth re-trying now with more experience.

I don't feel too terribly sad as I cleaned out. The extra space made it easier to organize my inventory. In doing so I discovered I have quiet enough work to enter some shows. But here is a farewell to some works;

and there was this work on paper that I would love to re-visit.

It has even made me thing more about working on paper, until I think of the framing expense!

Well here I go moving forward and shedding all the way!

10 Minutes

That's all it took sitting here in this swing with Miss V yesterday. Ten minutes, in albeit sweltering heat but, there was a breeze and we were in the shade. Miss V was content to look at her book and watch the occasional car go by. I could have some time with my thoughts. I had some studio time in my mind. It was so nice to just have the quiet time, outside, surrounded by trees. It didn't last long but it had some lasting effects. I hope this heat breaks soon so that we can have some more of those moments.

I don't know about everyone else, but there is nothing worse than being on the fence. I hate that moment in decision making when you can't decide which direction to take. Once the decision is made is much easier going. Well we've made the move decision, and I am ready to start that new adventure.

Now we are waiting. Waiting to schedule a mold (YIKES!!) check on our new adobe. Waiting to get a large truck to move our big items. I feel stuck on the fence. I am a planner, I wanna know when our last day is here, and our first day is there.

So, in the spririt of living in the moment, I am trying to enjoy my view from this fence, although it's a bit uncomfortable. Like most things in life, I can't change the situation right now so I'm going to make it work as best I can.

But I'm feeling a little antsy...

Just finished meeting with a friend for lunch.  We are holding each other to continue to create and supporting each other in goals.  So we made a list of things we would like to accomplish within our artistic realm in the next month when we will meet again and hopefully meet our goals!

I am feeling super inspired and am still driving towards getting my Etsy store where I would like it to be.  No more excuses.  Except maybe Miss V.  Can't miss quality time with her.

Doing what I can

Hi all! Not sure if anyone is still out there or not. But, I am trying very hard to make more time for my art, and blogging about it. Miss V is 6 months old!! And of course as I think I am getting better she is developing new ways to keep me occupied. Naps? Who needs naps?

I am still loving all of it though. I am hoping to soon feel like a Mom that is an artist, not just a Mom.

I have completed another commission for a dear friend. This was a gift for a race car driver. How cool is that!!
Super cool, but nerve racking. I mean, and owner of this souped up Porshe knows every line and color and wow it was a lot of detail. I did try to maintain my style though, and I think he really liked it!

Although, I think I'll stick with Pets for commissions.

In other news we are almost ready to move! Who said we can't do everything at once?! We are going to vacate and rent our downtown rowhome and embark on a new adventure...living with my Mom and Aunt. Now, they do have a basement apartment so the living quarters won't be that close. It's such a great opportunity for us to work on our 10 year plan of buying a larger house, and Miss V will get tons of quality time with Grandma and Aunt S. One of the biggest perks for me is that my studio will be steps away, and I will finally have some office space back to sit and blog and do some etsy-ing!

The Big Easy

Whew! As if being a new Mom wasn't challenge enough, I decided to plan a bachlorette party too! And I am so glad I did, it was a fabulous weekend. Great food, perfect group of girls, perfect weather, fantastic house rental and the right amount of shenanigans! There are only a few pictures to protect the innocent ;-)

A walk on Bourbon St. isn't complete without a random parade. The house we stayed at was a B&B which we had the complete run of. It was called The Collinwood house.

Showering a Friend

A very good friend of mine is getting married and we are in the midst of many celebrations for her. She is one of those people that always organizes festivities for others and as one of my bridesmaids she went above and beyond. So now that I have the chance to return the favor I am having a ball!

We threw a shower for her with the girls from the salon. It was a blast. Another co-worker and I came up with the idea of a bridal tree. Totally our brides style! We ornamented it with luggage tags and other fun bridal items. It was a hit, as were these yummy cake pops that I made! I am not usually a baker, but these turned out really good. I made chocolate and buttercream with pink coating. I was proud.

Easter

Although I grew up in religion, I consider myself less religious more spiritual.  I love the renewal aspect of the holiday. The fresh start the coincides with the reawakening of all the trees and flowers.  Particularly this year!  After what seemed like and extra long hibernation.

Miss V and I are so happy to be out and about in the sunshine, and I am finding stolen moments here and there to remember myself as more than a Mom.  I am determined to get a running schedule worked out and piece by piece I am building me Etsy store.  I hope the unveiling is soon!!  I just need about 3 more hours on the computer.  Ha, that translates in infant time, at an hour per week to 3 weeks from now!

Had a moment to cook the other night. We had some fresh midnight beets from the farmer's market. I sliced them super thin and made some yummy chips with a little olive oil and salt. Before I threw them in the oven I took this picture, the color and pattern was so cool.

Ok, so finding some moments here and there to get my Etsy store up and running. I started with my pet portraits, posted them on Sunday and already had some interest! I am totally excited by that! Once I finish tweaking I will have a grand opening. Little Miss V has been co-operating for the most part, and the Hubs is so helpful too.

Here's hoping to getting all pulled together and finding some time for a run too.

Operation get my a** in gear

Okay, so no secret I haven't been here in a while. And as Miss V has graced me with an early bedtime tonight and Hubby is working I find myself with a moment of free time. I am also finding tons of inspiration in my life today, and am planning on putting it to good use. (I really should be catching up on must needed sleep.)

I had a client come into the salon today, a fellow artist and I realized how little I get to talk about art anymore. Diapers and bodily functions, yes. Art not so much. She inspired me to get my ass in gear. I have an Etsy site and plan to finally use it! Yea me. AND I may even invest some money into my art making and hopefully selling. The timing is not great for that, but you know the saying "spend money...make money, really, really hope to make more than my money back" or something like that.

Then there is right now while I enjoy some seriously needed pretend that I have no responsibilities, piles of laundry, cleaning, sleeping and a very insistent 'to do' list to do. I have spent some time researching possible items to spend said money on and reading other artist blogs. It has felt really luxurious.

Ask me if I'll feel luxurious when Miss V is up in a few hours....
but the instant gratification is worth it.

I am so much more exited for spring this year. So much more than usual! Being able to get out and about with Miss V, family walks in the park and sleeping with the windows open. I'm so ready.

Sizing things up

It's amazing how such a tiny little thing can change your life in so many ways. We welcomed our beautiful little girl on January 16th and things will never be the same. I am enjoying every minute of it and trying to figure who I am now. It is such a complicated balancing act and I am still learning. I did finish one commission during maternity leave but haven't been in the studio since.

I am in awe of some fellow bloggers who are able to post almost daily and raise a family(not to mention continue to create work). Perhaps it is something that will come with time. My goal for now is to post more often than I have been and at least do some work in my sketch book and share that here as well as some photographs that I have been taking while Miss V and I are out strolling.

I hope this post is the beginning of me getting back in the swing of things.

Spending the last night of 2010 relaxing with my feet up. Enjoying a movie and the last night by Christmas lights. Decorations are coming down tomorrow. I hate to see them go, but it gives us a lot of room back in the house.

Christmas on our block

Our first year of collectively stringing lights. It's so nice to come home to, even if there isn't any parking! And the picture was taken with my brand new DSLR!! Boy I love that camera. I am having so much fun with it. Many more pictures to come.

The holidays were low key and relaxing. It seems we are entering upon the quiet before the storm. 5 more weeks till baby girl arrives.

Christmas tree farm

Every year Hubby and I go to Davidson's Christmas tree farm to cut down our tree. It's one of my favorite traditions! Yesterday was a busy day, so as far as we got was the tree in the stand. Decorating will commence tomorrow! I so enjoy the holidays, I want a whole 4 weeks to enjoy the living room lit, by the light of the tree. Happy start to the Holiday's!

I was so blown over by this thoughtful gift.  I have LOVED this blanket since I first started knitting years ago.  I mentioned it to one of my co-workers who started knitting last year.  I was so touched when she presented it to me at my shower.  I wanted to wrap myself in it!!!  The handmade gifts are the best!

Maybe I will tackle one myself now, and pass on the love.

So the creative juices have started to flow. I haven't put it to the test yet, Monday will be the show down in the studio. (It won't be put back together yet. But, I should have a plan B).

First I started reading some of my favorite blogs out there, then I researched some of my favorite artist and checked out some new ones. That was certainly a dose of inspiration. I combed through the latest Artist Opportunities Monthly and put up some show entry deadlines for myself. (that usually is a good kick in the butt). Lastly, I went to my favorite site that just oozes with creativity and prolific artist; check it out here. I mean seriously, look at this studio visit with Jamie Vasta! I am in awe.

So writing, and sketching and really looking forward to producing and feeling like my old self. Wish me luck!

Rainy day

No work today. It's so gloomy out, rainy and the colorful leaves are falling off the trees. I decided not to fight it. After a morning of errand running, I've made a cup of tea and will catch up on the two Netflix movies, that have been sitting for the last month. If motivation sets in I can catch up on household chores. But for now, I am going to enjoy laziness. And maybe tackle something yummy in the kitchen.

No good dead

It's no secret that I haven't been very productive lately. But, it is the time of year for art auction and I usually try to participate when I can. (I have a hard time with the word "No").
I agreed to donate to a particular one and then quickly realized that I have such a depleted inventory and the little one is using all my creative juices. So, before I went out of town I found this 10x10 encaustic that I had started in the spring. Great, a few tweaks and it will be ready to go.

When I headed into the studio this morning - my mother's garage - my encaustic work table had been cleared of supplies and stored away to be replaced with new ceiling tiles for Mom's basement. oh crap....Well I believe what I said was a bit more foul and imaginative than that. (I guess that's what I get for not being in the studio much this month.) Then there is the problem that the painting needs to be picked up at noon, and it is now 9:30am.
I bring the painting, one clay tool and a razor back to my house. Then realize that my office which has been taken apart to begin the nursery is scattered all over, and I need to print out my bio, and auction form. Hmmm...so I quickly throw together an office on my kitchen table with my power book and printer. I pull out the encaustic painting on the other end of the table and begin to make my tweaks. Here is the result. I rather like it, thankfully. And I delivered the painting on time. Whew!!!

Halloween in our 'hood

I have been feeling good! Ran a 10miler with some friends at 17 weeks. Here is a bump picture.

I have been avoiding posting because I haven't been able to create anything in the studio. I've been going, and just can't seem to create anything. I'm gonna blame it on the baby! Must be using up all of my creating energy.

Did have some fun weekend trips with the girls. Vegas and the local beach. They were bachlorette parties, so no pictures I can post! But, I really wish I could post some pictures of some actual artwork!! Here's to hoping I get some motivation soon. And meanwhile, I am going to try not to be so hard on myself.

Leaving the Farm today, and really wish we could stay longer. Hubby and I are so relaxed. We wonder if we should give up our city life. Alas vacationing is much different than living in a place.

Growing up we spent every summer here at my Aunt and Uncles in Ohio. Such great memories. I hope our new addition gets to enjoy it as much as I did. Lots of family and fun! And now we are road tripping home.

A new addition

Hubby and I are expecting our first child in February. It's one of the reasons that it's been so quiet here. That and I am just enjoying the summer! Spending a lot of time relaxing, and doing lots of summer activities.

I feel slightly guilty for not getting enough time in the studio. But I am sure I will get back in the swings of things soon. Until them enjoying our good news and the slow pace of summer.

Peanuts and crackers jacks

Had a great time watching the Ironbirds, our local minor league team.  Great seats, affordable treats and the team always puts in a great effort.

The weather has finally broken as well.  For a week or so I felt a bit confined.  The temps and humidity were so bad I couldn't enjoy being outside for summertime fun.  The past few days have been great, and morning runs finally enjoyable again.  There may even be a breeze today! 

Urban gardening

Last year Hubby and I attempted our first urban garden on our row home roof. It was a but too hot, and nothing was very happy, including me when I had to trek up 3 floors to water.

This year we turned our cement backyard into a container garden and have been enjoying it all summer. The lettuce is about done, the herbs are going crazy as are the jalapeno's and the cayenne peppers. Hubby doesn't like spicy, so I'll be giving away some salsa!

I am really looking forward to the tomatoes!! In a week or two we'll be able to enjoy the first one of the summer.

I am so thankful, I can just walk out the back door to water!

My favorite pastime

Even though I have been seriously slacking on the posting lately.  I felt like for my 100th post I should do something big.  But I couldn't come up with anything!!  I  am having serious brain fog lately.  

Instead, Erika asked me about some book recommendation yesterday and gave me a good idea for today.

I have always been addicted to reading.  When time allows 2 or 3 books in a week!  My friends always ask me what books I recommend.  Sometimes I hesitate because I feel it's a bit subjective.  But, hey they don't have to like them, or finish them.  

Here is a small list of my favorite all time reads.  I will say I love all kinds of books.  And most of my summer reading right now are crime novels, and chic lit.  Usually because I read so much and you only stumble upon an amazing book every once in a while.

So here is my list:

Even though I have been feeling like this....

I've been feeling out of sorts, and then had some internet issues. But I think I am back on my game again, hopefully there won't be an absence like that again!

With the temperatures staying near 100, and the humidity oppressive I have been hitting the studio early. I spent Monday morning laying the ground work for my new commission. It's 3 pets, the client is using them to decorate her nursery. I LOVE that idea. They are turning out great. I should be half way done with one more trip to the studio this week.

The heat has made me feel a bit house bound as well, but I have the Tour de France to keep my company! And some research I have been needing to get done, as well as planning a few up-coming trips.

Wow, it didn't take much to catch up on my lost two weeks!

Now back to the heat.

The painting for my Aunt is finished, and hopefully shipped off this week. I hope her husband likes it!

I had a few moments to work on a new encaustic. It's in the early stages. With this heat wave, it's a bit warm in my studio, and the wax is a bit gummy to work with. I'm hoping for some cooler temps soon. I'm starting a new pet portrait commission this coming week.

After a nice relaxing weekend. Take-out and movie night on Saturday, and Sunday morning a walk by the water and a latte.

While we were enjoying a yummy pastry we watch the urban pirates take off on a Father's Day cruise of pillaging and chaos.

Feeling a bit under the weather today, but I must finish my Aunt's commission because a new pet portrait commission arrived in my in box this morning! I hope to feel good enough to get some of my personal work done as well.

Wow, I have been neglecting my blogging! I can't believe it's been a week. Just when I say I am going to be better with it. It doesn't help that I have so little time in the studio. I am almost finished a pet portrait for my Aunt. I hope to post it later this week.

I am brimming with ideas, and can't wait to get to work on some of my own paintings. I am feeling a bit crazed in the rest of my life right now. Need to get into a summer routine!

I absolutely feel in love with two artist in particular this past weekend. I went back everyday to look at Cedric Smith's paintings everyday that we were there. Savannah

We had a fabulous get-a-way this past weekend to Savannah.  After a quick visit with a family friend in Portsmouth, VA we spent the rest of our long weekend in the historic district of Savannah.  It was a great weekend.  I loved how artsy it was.  There were some great art galleries, fun shopping and boy did we eat well!  

I have to say my favorite part of the weekend was just wandering around checking out the architecture and the gardens.

While eating some awesome pizza at Vinnie A Go-Go's, this primered car pulled up. This guys gets out, pulls a box of chalk out and after writing the instructions " write on me" on the car, leaves the box of chalk on the roof. We couldn't resist adding a few touches. How fun!!

We are back to reality now, but my work schedule is changing. That means I am going to be able to focus more on my art. Can't wait to get to the studio!

Birthday

I turned 35 this past week. Every year I reflect on two special memories I had of my birthday growing up. First I would wake up to yard-picked flowers next to my bed that my Mom had cut. They were usually peonies, but not always. (I guess that's why they are my favorite flower! Not to mention the wonderful smell. We won't mention the ant factor)

The second was that my Dad would mow a special message in the grass for me. I grew up in an unusual house, it was built like a row home, one room wide, three long. But, it sat alone on a few acres. So, from my bedroom window I had the perfect view on this large patch of grass we ironically called the "back forty". (It was a hard patch to mow, very damp and as a result the grass grew really high.) Most of the time it was just my new age. But I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!

When ever I travel I love to buy work from local artist. Not only do I have unique pieces and support other artist, I have an artwork that hold memories of a particular place and adventure.

So, I was very excited that on the tails of the great painting I received from my Aunt and Uncle, I just got this as a Birthday gift!!
So cool, and even more amazing a 14 year old young man created this!

My closest Aunt THE Aunt*, as my brother and I refer to her, bought this in Anguilla. The young man is hoping to get into art AND fashion. I hope I get to meet him, when I travel there again. I love the sparkle detail. The figures bodies are made of caning material. Just so cool.

Now I have to find the perfect spot for it. Right now it's propped up on my bookshelf.

*(Aunt Sally is my Dad's only sister, and she moved to be closer to my brother and I when we were young, so we grew up with her very close to us. I apprenticed with her as a shopper, she has a great talent for doing any type of shopping. We have so much fun, and now I am a professional as well. She is also a fabulous cook, channeling my grandmother. And she always supports my shoe habit!!)

Hubby and I played hooky today to take the dogs for a nice hike in the woods. I was hoping to wake up to sun, but it was cloudy. That's ok at least it's cooler and not humid.

On our way back from the beach the girls and I stopped at a great junk store. We have decided we needed to make a trip just to junk store shop and rent a u-haul. How fun would that be!?

Girls Get Away

This weekend was a lovely beach get-a-way with the girls. The house we rented last year was not available, but we stumbled upon THIS perfect guest cottage.

The weather didn't co-operate with us at all. Chilly, rainy and even foggy (which is a but unusual). But we had a great time, drinking, eating and shopping. We spent the majority of our time on the patio and chatting. It was fabulous!

I am already looking forward to next year's trip. (Maybe with some days that include some sunshine though)

wanderings and pondering

I seem to be second guessing myself lately. I have been excited to make work, and yet not sure what that work is yet. I am on the edge of something, but it is certainly unknown.

I have had a nice morning, postponing my workout till this afternoon. So, I've been catching up on my blog reading, straightening up, packing for a much needed weekend away with the girls and taking a walk around my neighborhood instead of a run. It is nice to slow down and take notice. I was inspired by this post. I LOVE the 4th image. Sandra Juto's blog always calms me, and makes me take notice. I am grateful for her posts.

I am determined to not be too hard on myself. Today is a rare day when my work day isn't to crazy. The next two weeks are going to be busy and I know I won't have studio time. But I am going to sketch and work through this. I have lots of fun things on my calendar, but my day job is going to be very consuming between all the fun. I am thankful that I am busy at work, but can't wait to get some studio time!

I love receiving post wedding presents. It's always a nice surprise. But THIS is awesome.

It's always so special to receive something handmade, and especially from the artist herself! My talented aunt Judy Deisher and my uncle gave this fantastic painting to us. Her work is so magical. The butterfly is always a reminder of my Dad, and her work includes them often. I also own a sculpture of hers, where the women is covered in butterflies.

This fits perfect in our home, and I was so happy to hang it today!

Proms, trains, and automobiles

Hubby and I took our nephew to a friends prom in Ashland, VA this weekend. It was a nice night away.

After taking pictures of all the lovely prom goers, we got to experience Ashland. It's such a lovely small town, the surrounding country side is beautiful, and my favorite part is that the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac railway line runs right through the middle of town.

We enjoyed a trackside table at The Iron Horse restaurant and indulged in an ice cream cone while walking through town. Nephew returned safe and sound, and had a lot of fun! I was thankful to have some uninterupted time with Hubby.

While finally catching up on my blog reading - which is just one of my favorite things to do - I was so pleasantly surprised and totally flattered to find an I Love Your Blog award for me here .

How cool!! It totally made my day!!

"Converging" oil and conte on canvas

When I was working on my BFA in painting, my senior thesis revolved around vessels. I was inspired by my study abroad experience in Italy. Specifically Sorrento, where from the cliff's above the Bay of Naples fishing boats turned into a more abstracted shape.

A few years after graduation I was a resident artist at The Holt Center for the Arts. And I think it may be this painting that introduced the house form, I don't even think it was a conscience decision.

For 10 years I have been working with this image. I keep thinking that it's time to move on. So most recently I feel like I am searching in the studio. Obviously the house form is still front and center, but I am hoping by letting myself play something will develop.

Not far from the tree...Part 2

Some of my Mother's new projects include "yard art" which is really fun, and easy. A great recycling idea for old vases, plates cups etc.. Just pick up some GOOP, and attach the glass items to make, bird feeders, candlesticks, cake stands, and more interesting vases.

She also took a class at The Visionary Art Museum here in Baltimore and has a had a great time making these 'flashes'. The dogs love to chase the reflections across the lawn.

My Mom has 4 sisters who are all creative, smart and fun. They are like the ya-ya's but lucky enough to be related and close as well. 3 of the four sisters came in to town this weekend and aside from imbiding in there very dangerous daquiri recipe, they made even more yard art and took a flashes class.

A great time was had by all!

I am a fortunate girl, to have such inspiring women in my life.

In honor of Mother's Day.

When my Mom tells people that her daughter is an artist and her son is an actor (and photographer), she always says she doesn't know where we get it from. Seriously Mom?! My Mother is one of the most inventive and creative people I know. She knows how to do just about everything, knitting, crochet, upholstery, cross-stitching, caning (yes, caning)and sewing. This is just naming a few things, not even mentioning household projects that she tackles. It's great because she has instilled in me the idea that I really can learn how to do anything!

And they are a great addition to her sculpture garden. There is an area behind our house where she displays her finds. She is an avid junk store and antiqu-er. If I need something between her and her sisters, I put the word out and viola! (When I needed 200 dessert dishes for my wedding, they had them in under 3 weeks!)

So here is her sculpture garden where she shows off some if her finds. It sits on an ivy covered hill behind her house.

I have discovered I am a creature of habit. I tend to run the same routes, walk the dogs on the same blocks etc... But, I am trying to break out of that. And when I do look what I find!!!

How adventurous and creative! I came upon it, and thought what a nice surprise.

Iron Mountain

Yay! A few hours in the studio yesterday, and two finished pieces. Finally! Iron Mountain 1, and the Anguilla house are complete.

The pics aren't the best.  I forgot my camera, so had to take the photo's with my phone.   I played around a bit in encaustic.  This image I attempted in oil a few years ago, and it just didn't work.  Hopefully it will come to life now.  I didn't quite have my sparkle as the afternoon wore on, so I ended up calling it quits a bit earlier than I had planned.  

Rooftop with a Bang

This weekend we finally got to christen our new rooftop furniture. We assembled and set up everything 2 weeks ago, and then we had many evenings of wind and rain. Finally! A perfect night, a great group of friends and what will now be considered Big Bang appetizers. (Which were a huge hit!)

"Golden" Found Art Friday

Ok, this is unusually abstract for me. I'm not sure if it comes through here or not, but the gold pigment is really strong, so a little goes a long way. It's an encaustic painting, that may become a diptych.

Rainy weekend

Was a cloudy and rainy weekend here. Spent a very lazy Saturday night organizing my contacts and then watching "The Fabulous Mr. Fox" (so delightful!) I have been very inspired by many blogs this weekend in many ways. Most importantly I was inspired to take this coming Wednesday off for a studio day, since my Monday will be filled with working AGAIN. I have also been inspired to add to my serious list of wants; which follows my wish for an archival printer is a DSLR. It was proven both here, and here that I just can't take the pictures I want to with out one. So I must begin budgeting!!

Sunday we spent visiting our local poultry farm, and stocked up on some herbs and flowers to plant as well. I started getting some potted. I can't wait to get our tomato plants going, but I will wait till mid May for that. I hope to try the earth box's on our rooftop. They are kinda expensive, but home grown tomatoes are worth it!

I am still not feeling 100 percent after a stomach bug. I miss running and my active routine, but I still have no energy. I have to go into work, although I think I may need another day to chill. Oh well!!

Anguilla House

Ok, the Anguilla house is almost done for my Aunt Laura. I feel like I post a lot of work in progress, but I am just happy to be able to post some art this week. The picture I am working from isn't the best so I boosted some of the color, and made the flora in full bloom. I mean come on it's Anguilla!! The final layer will add a little more precision and deal with the shadows on the porch a but more. Seeing it as a photo, it's even clearer what needs to be tweaked!

I think I mentioned before my "Aunt" Laura's mom still lives here and it was built in The Valley by her great-grandfather. There are really cool ginger bread details in the woodwork throughout the inside. My Aunt Sally and Laura are going to visit in two weeks. I will be there in spirit!

Now I need to finish a painting for my Aunt Lois. It's a gift, a surprise for her husband. Boy, my family is keeping me busy!!

Fun with Wax

I'm still playing with using the wood as an element. I don't think this is finished yet.

This guy is finally done. Now I am not sure weather I want to orient it horizontal like this, or put the circles at the bottom. hmmmm.

I also worked on my Found Art Friday piece, which you will have to wait to see! I'll post it on April 30th. It's been a happy accident that I may be able to use this "Golden" piece for a new business opportunity. I hope so!

I often wonder if I could get into the studio more often would I be more prolific? Or is it the down time that gives me the energy? I felt a bit inspired while painting, and hope to sketch out some of those ideas. I haven't worked through the "rib/houses" idea, but I think it will work best in encaustic. Above all, I am really hoping to keep the fun going.
